Volunteer firefighter Grigoris Schozias loses his home while rescuing dozens in Vilia wildfire

A large wildfire has been raging in the Vilia area of western Attica and Boeotia for three days, prompting a massive response that includes 496 firefighters, 22 EMODE volunteer teams, 134 ground vehicles, 19 aircraft and 11 helicopters. Forces from France and Romania have also been deployed under the EU civil‑protection mechanism.

Volunteer firefighter Grigoris Schozias fought on the front line for three consecutive 24‑hour periods. Together with his team he helped save more than ten houses and numerous properties. While battling the flames, the fire reached his own home and completely destroyed it, leaving only the walls. Schozias told Alpha TV, “We rescued many neighbours’ homes, but no one could save mine – it was reduced to ashes.”
