Villa Aurora reopens in Los Angeles after wildfires

The Villa Aurora, a historic German cultural center and former exile home of writer Lion Feuchtwanger and activist Marta Feuchtwanger, has officially reopened in the Pacific Palisades district of Los Angeles. The residence narrowly escaped destruction during devastating wildfires in January 2025, while many surrounding homes were burned to their foundations.

Following the fires, the facility underwent extensive renovations to repair smoke damage and restore its gardens. During the reopening ceremony, officials expressed gratitude to Justin Jampol, founder of the Wende Museum, who took the initiative to monitor the property during the fires and organized the rescue of artworks from the Villa Aurora and the Thomas Mann House.

Director Claudia Gordon noted that the institution is currently reviewing additional fire protection measures due to the increasing risks of living in a wildfire-prone area. The reopening event was attended by friends, neighbors, and representatives from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
