Villa de Pitanxo suspects ordered to appear in Spanish Audiencia Nacional on Aug 5

Spanish law designates the month of August as judicially inactive for most procedures, with limited exceptions for urgent matters under articles of the Organic Law of the Judicial Power, the Civil Procedure Law, the Criminal Procedure Law and the Social Jurisdiction Law.

Despite the general holiday, the Audiencia Nacional remains operational. Three individuals accused in the Villa de Pitanxo ship‑wreck case – captain Juan Enrique Padín, Flota director José Antonio Nores Marín and administrator José Antonio Nores Rodríguez – failed to appear as scheduled and have been ordered to travel to Madrid on 5 August. The court also required the defendants to provide a joint civil guarantee of €44 million within one day to secure potential liability, while the ship‑owner and its insurer British Marine will be summoned as civil parties.

The requirement underscores that August court closures do not preclude urgent criminal proceedings, and the case proceeds amid the holiday period.
