Villa Las Estrellas requires appendectomies for new residents

Villa Las Estrellas, a Chilean settlement located at Frei Base on King George Island in Antarctica, requires prospective residents to undergo an appendectomy before moving to the community.

While the settlement provides amenities such as a school, library, post office, bank, and supermarket, medical facilities are extremely limited due to its isolated location. The nearest medical facility is approximately 600 miles (965 km) away. Although doctors are present at the research center, there is no guarantee that a surgeon capable of handling acute appendicitis will be available.

Because appendicitis can progress rapidly and the harsh Antarctic weather makes emergency medical evacuations difficult, the preventative surgery requirement aims to mitigate the risk of life-threatening medical emergencies that the local facility cannot manage.
