Villa Mercedes judge orders detention for man accused of attempted murder

A judge in Villa Mercedes has ordered the preventive detention of José Castro, who is accused of attempting to murder two sisters with a knife on October 3.

During a recent hearing, Judge Santiago Ortiz rejected defense arguments to downgrade the charges to assault. The judge ruled that the nature, location, and quantity of the wounds, along with the specific use of the weapon, supported the original charge of attempted homicide in two separate counts.

Castro testified that the incident stemmed from a land dispute and claimed he used the knife in self-defense. His legal team argued that the injuries were superficial and that there was no intent to kill. However, prosecutor Cecilia Framini successfully argued for detention, noting that Castro had remained in hiding for two days following the attack and citing potential risks to the victims and the integrity of the investigation.
