Villa of Oplontis: A luxurious Roman estate near Pompeii

The Villa of Oplontis, located near Pompeii in what is now Torre Annunziata, stands as one of the largest and most luxurious estates of the ancient Roman Empire. The villa, which features 99 rooms, gardens, and colonnades, served as a rural retreat for the Roman elite near the Gulf of Naples.

Archaeological evidence, including inscriptions found on amphorae, suggests the summer residence may have belonged to the Poppaei family, specifically Poppaea Sabina, the second wife of Emperor Nero. The estate was destroyed and buried under six meters of mud and debris during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Although rediscovered in the 16th century, the site was not extensively excavated until the 1960s.
