Villa Urquiza celebrates 139th anniversary

The Villa Urquiza neighborhood in Buenos Aires is celebrating its 139th anniversary. Originally founded on October 2, 1887, as Villa Catalinas, the area's development was linked to the ‘Muelle de las Catalinas’ company, which utilized the land for soil transport to fill low-lying areas.

On October 16, 1901, the neighborhood adopted its current name in honor of General Justo José de Urquiza to mark the centenary of his birth. Commemorative activities include a mass at the Parroquia del Carmen and musical performances by the Orquesta del Tango de Buenos Aires. Additional festivities, including a milonga, are planned for late October at Plaza Echeverría.

The neighborhood, which is part of Comuna 12, has a history shaped by the arrival of the Buenos Aires to Rosario railway in 1889 and the former existence of the Las Catalinas station.
