Villa Vie Odyssey halts operations due to rising fuel costs
The Villa Vie Odyssey, a residential cruise ship designed to offer permanent sea-based living, has suspended its operations. The company, Villa Vie Residences, announced that the vessel is entering a warm lay-up after being unable to secure the necessary fuel to continue its global itinerary.
The decision was driven by a massive surge in fuel costs, which the company attributed to global energy crises and geopolitical tensions, including conflicts involving Iran and the Strait of Hormuz. In some regions of Asia, fuel expenses reportedly rose from an average of $1,800 per cabin per month to between $6,000 and $8,000.
Residents, who had purchased long-term living arrangements ranging from $59,999 for five-year packages to nearly $440,000 for permanent cabins, were notified of the suspension while the ship was in Cambodia. Passengers were given approximately seven hours to disembark with their belongings. While the company is working with residents to coordinate temporary living arrangements, it stated that no specific outcome for the future of the voyage is currently assured.
