Villa Vie Residences suspends Odyssey voyage in Cambodia

The Villa Vie Odyssey, a residential cruise ship designed for long-term living, has suspended its around-the-world voyage in Sihanoukville, Cambodia. The operator, Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, cited unsustainable fuel costs as the primary cause for the suspension. The company reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin rose from an average of $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000 in parts of Asia, a surge attributed to geopolitical conflicts involving Iran.

Approximately 200 passengers, many of whom had purchased cabins for up to $440,000 and sold their homes to live aboard, were ordered to disembark with only seven to eight hours' notice. The passengers, representing about 15 nationalities and mostly from the United States, have been left in Sihanoukville facing uncertain living arrangements.

Founder Mikael Petterson acknowledged the operational failure, describing himself as the “villain in the story” while stating he is working to support residents. The company is currently evaluating restructuring and recapitalization options over the next 60 days, with reports indicating plans to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States.
