Villa Vie Residences suspends Odyssey cruise in Cambodia

The residential cruise ship MV Odyssey has suspended its global voyage and docked in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, after its operator, Florida-based Villa Vie Residences, cited unsustainable fuel costs. The company reported that monthly fuel expenses per cabin in parts of Asia have surged from an average of $1,800 to between $6,000 and $8,000, a spike attributed to geopolitical tensions and the war in Iran.

Approximately 203 passengers and 156 crew members were affected by the sudden suspension. Many passengers had purchased or rented cabins as permanent or long-term homes, with some selling personal assets to fund the multi-year journey. Reports indicate that residents were given as little as seven hours to disembark and arrange for accommodation.

Villa Vie Residences stated it is working to coordinate temporary living arrangements for those on board while pursuing restructuring and recapitalization over the next 60 days. However, the company noted that no outcome is assured. The vessel is currently in a temporary layup period, and its future operations remain uncertain.
