Village of Clinton maintains evacuation alerts due to flood risk

The Village of Clinton has maintained evacuation alerts for several properties due to heightened flood risks and slope instability. While some areas have been downgraded to ‘all clear’, properties along Highway 97 between LeBourdais Avenue and the ambulance station remain under alert.

Local officials state that the Pear Lake wildfire has exacerbated existing geological risks. The loss of vegetation and changes to the terrain have increased the likelihood of runoff, which can carry ash, soil, and debris into Clinton Creek. A primary concern is the area where the creek passes under a railway embankment. Debris could potentially block an undersized culvert beneath the CN rail line, leading to sudden water accumulation and flooding.

Clinton CAO Brian Doddridge noted that the gully downstream from the water treatment plant has experienced substantial burning. There are concerns that shifting slopes could destabilize the water main, the water treatment plant itself, or the road access to the facility. The village is working with geotechnical experts to find solutions to shore up the slopes and protect critical infrastructure.
