Villages Vivants cooperative combats rural desertification in France

Villages Vivants, a collective interest cooperative (SCIC) founded in 2017, is working to combat rural desertification in southeastern France. The organization focuses on revitalizing local communities by purchasing, renovating, and leasing vacant buildings at affordable rates to entrepreneurs.

By supporting various businesses such as bakeries, cafes, and inns, the cooperative aims to restore essential local services and social cohesion. To date, Villages Vivants has facilitated the opening of 35 locations, with five additional projects expected to launch by the end of the year. The initiative has generated 150 jobs and relies heavily on short supply chains, with 87% of its users being local residents.

According to co-founder Sylvain Dumas, the model helps ensure that capital is reinvested locally. The impact is significant for the communities involved; 86% of the supported locations reported that the cooperative's assistance was a decisive factor in their success.
