Villahermosa mayor launches historic centre revitalization plan
Mayor Yolanda Osuna Huerta of Villahermosa opened a forum titled “Between History and the Future: The Challenges of Historic Centres,” outlining a new strategy to turn the city’s historic centre into a living urban landscape in line with UNESCO guidelines. The plan moves beyond façade restoration to integrate architecture, public spaces, commerce, cultural activities and the Grijalva River as a natural heritage asset.
Key actions announced include the rehabilitation of the Centro Cultural Villahermosa, the opening of the Casa Barrio Mágico, façade restorations, improvements to the urban image, promotion of cultural events, and the revaluation of the river. Osuna emphasized coordination with UNESCO and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) to ensure a long‑term, dynamic approach to heritage preservation.
