Villajoyosa fishing fleet faces losses due to rising diesel prices
The Villajoyosa Fishermen's Guild has warned that rising diesel prices are forcing parts of the local fishing fleet to operate at a loss, threatening the continuity of some vessels. The issue is particularly acute for trawlers.
According to data provided by the Guild, a trawler may generate average daily sales of approximately 1,500 euros while consuming up to 1,000 liters of diesel. At a price of 1.20 euros per liter, fuel costs alone can reach 1,200 euros. When combined with other essential expenses—such as Social Security contributions, oil, provisions, and vessel maintenance—certain fishing days result in a net loss.
Miguel Felipe Solbes, the Guild's head skipper, stated that while the sector has absorbed previous price increases, the current costs have become exorbitant and are directly compromising daily results. This financial strain also impacts crews, as the remaining profit to be split between shipowners and fishermen decreases as operating costs rise.
