Villamarina hospital dedicates entrance hall to Nelso Calonaci

The entrance hall of the Villamarina hospital has been officially dedicated to the memory of Nelso Calonaci, a prominent obstetrician and gynecologist who served the Val di Cornia and Elba regions for decades.

Calonaci, who passed away in October 2025, began his career in Piombino in 1973. He held chief physician roles in Portoferraio, Piombino, and Cecina, contributing significantly to the development of local maternity and gynecology services. A commemorative plaque in the hall describes him as the ‘gynecologist of entire generations of women from Val di Cornia.’

The dedication ceremony was attended by healthcare officials from Azienda USL Toscana Nord Ovest, including administrative director Gabriele Morotti and hospital director Giovanna Poliseno, as well as Calonaci’s daughter, Giulia, who is also a gynecologist.
