Villaputzu citizens to protest Ponte di Ferro closure

Citizens in Villaputzu and the Sarrabus-Gerrei region are organizing a protest for September 26 to mark more than 1,000 days of closure of the Ponte di Ferro, which connects Villaputzu and Muravera across the Flumendosa river. The protest will feature a symbolic human chain spanning the two banks of the river.

The Committee for the new bridge, led by Antonio Congiu, has criticized the management of the project, citing errors, negligence, and delays. According to the Committee, only about 8 percent of the work has been completed despite the project being significantly overdue. The situation was further complicated by the transfer of jurisdiction from the Province of Sud Sardegna to the Metropolitan City of Cagliari in October 2025.

Following the removal of the previous contractor due to non-compliance, the Metropolitan City of Cagliari is expected to assign the works to the next company on the ranking list within days. Villaputzu Mayor Pierpaolo Piu is coordinating with the Metropolitan City and the Ministry of Infrastructure, while also advocating for a special commissioner to oversee the project due to its strategic importance.
