Villarreal sexual abuse case triggers cover-up investigation in Córdoba
Legal complaints have been filed against judicial and police agents in Villa María de Río Seco, Córdoba, alleging the obstruction of a sexual abuse investigation involving former legislative advisor José Villarreal.
Lawyer Mariana Romano filed charges for aggravated cover-up and denial of justice, claiming a 2020 report by a victim was effectively shelved for six years. The investigation, now led by prosecutor Analía Cepede, involves allegations of grooming, sexual abuse, and exploitation of at least four minors aged 11 to 16. To date, 15 men have been implicated, with 16 total detainees and one fugitive.
The case has caused significant political fallout, leading to the resignation of legislator Ramón Flores following the arrest of his former advisor, Villarreal. Prosecutors are investigating whether political protection contributed to the delay in processing the original complaints.
