Villena Museum robbed of Bronze Age gold treasure

A major theft occurred at the Villena Museum (MUVI) in Spain, where thieves stole a significant portion of the ‘Treasure of Villena’, one of Europe’s most important collections of Bronze Age gold artifacts. The robbery took place in the early morning hours of August 27, with the museum alarm triggering at 5:16 AM, by which time the perpetrators had already entered the building and removed much of the treasure.

The incident has sparked political controversy because a warning from Europol regarding increased criminal interest in gold and precious metals reached the museum a day too late. Although Europol published its report on August 24, warning of shifting criminal tactics targeting European museums, the Villena Museum did not receive the notification until the afternoon of August 28.

The regional government of Valencia has defended its actions, stating it could not forward the warning earlier because it had not received it from the Ministry of Culture until after the theft was completed. The Ministry reportedly sent the alert to autonomous communities on August 28, which was then passed to the museum by the Valencian government's museum service less than an hour later.
