Villena Treasure stolen from Spanish museum in rapid heist

Thieves executed a professional robbery at the MUVI Museum in Villena, Spain, stealing a significant portion of the 3,000-year-old Villena Treasure. The heist occurred in the early hours of August 27, with suspects entering through a window and fleeing within approximately four minutes. To distract authorities, a false alarm was reportedly triggered at a local sports center shortly before the museum breach.

The stolen items include approximately 10 kilograms of gold, valued at an estimated $2 million, including gold bowls and ornaments. However, the thieves left behind the collection's most scientifically significant piece: a bracelet made from meteorite iron. Analysis completed in 2023 revealed the item is the oldest space-sourced iron object on the Iberian Peninsula.

Experts expressed concern that the stolen gold-plated meteorite piece could be mistaken for scrap metal and destroyed. Professor Ignacio Montero warned that once the gold decorations are stripped, the rusted meteorite iron becomes nearly impossible to distinguish from common scrap. Villena Mayor Fulgencio Cerdán described the community as “devastated” by the loss of their cultural heritage.
