Villerupt Italian Film Festival celebrates cultural heritage

The Villerupt Italian Film Festival, established in 1976 in the Lorraine region of France, continues to serve as a major cultural event for Italian cinema enthusiasts. Originally founded by cinephiles to honor the significant Italian immigrant population in the Pays-Haut mining and steel region, the festival has grown from a small local gathering into a large-scale event attracting over 35,000 spectators annually.

The festival features between 60 and 70 films across hundreds of screenings. Recent and upcoming editions include hundreds of sessions spread across multiple venues and cities, extending its reach from Villerupt to other parts of Lorraine and into Luxembourg.

Complementing the cinematic program, local businesses integrate with the festival's theme. The Idiesis bookstore provides a specialized selection of Italian literary works, noting that festival sales can equal two months of their standard turnover. Additionally, the Luxembourg-based Libreria Italiana participates by offering books in Italian, further strengthening the cultural link between the regions.
