Vilnius businesses proposed tax relief amid city repairs

The Freedom Party faction in Vilnius has proposed a support package for local businesses affected by ongoing street and public space renovations. These construction projects have reportedly reduced customer traffic, hindered goods delivery, and restricted access to shops and cafes.

The proposed measures include proportional reductions in real estate, land, and municipal rent taxes for businesses facing significant access restrictions lasting longer than three months. For summer renovations, relief would be suggested starting from the first month. Additionally, the proposal suggests providing free temporary signage in construction zones and utilizing city communication channels, such as social media and outdoor advertising screens, to increase the visibility of active businesses.

To mitigate the impact on hospitality, the plan suggests providing nearby public spaces for businesses that lose outdoor terraces or trading areas. The proposal also calls for stricter requirements for contractors, including ensuring pedestrian access and delivery routes, with financial incentives for early completion and penalties for prolonged occupation of public spaces. Evalda Šiškauskienė, president of the Lithuanian Hotel and Restaurant Association, noted that these issues are particularly pressing for establishments in Vilnius Old Town.
