Vilnius City Council approves 1.75 billion euro budget

The Vilnius City Council has approved a budget of 1.75 billion euros for the current year. The allocation follows a lengthy negotiation process involving various municipal departments and political factions.

Education remains the largest expenditure, accounting for approximately one-third of the total budget. This funding is designated for teacher salaries, school renovations, and the construction of new educational facilities in growing districts such as Pavilnys and Naujininkai. Other major priorities include transport infrastructure, such as road repairs and bicycle path expansion, as well as social housing and the renewal of public spaces.

Additionally, the municipality is increasing its support for sports projects, allocating 1.5 million euros for the upcoming year. A significant portion of this—1 million euros—will be dedicated to free physical activity programs, including regular exercises and sports training. The remaining funds will support mass participation events and professional sports competitions. The city is also updating its sports funding model, which will transition to three distinct funding categories by 2027.
