Vilnius completes major reconstruction of J. Basanavičius Street
Major reconstruction work on J. Basanavičius Street in Vilnius has been completed, restoring a key connection between the Old Town and New Town. The project included renewing the street surface, installing a storm sewage system, and replacing emergency water supply networks.
To improve urban mobility, the street now features sidewalks, bicycle lanes in both directions, and new stairs designed to ensure better accessibility for people with disabilities. Historical paving materials were preserved and reused during the process. Additionally, six ‘Kiss & Ride’ short-term stopping points were installed.
Public transport services are returning to their regular routes. While service toward Trakų Street resumed on September 1, trolleybus and bus traffic in both directions is scheduled to be fully restored by September 23. Minor remaining works are expected to be finished by the end of October without impacting traffic.
