Vilnius implements systemic measures to combat rising traffic congestion

Vilnius city administration is implementing systemic measures to address increasing traffic congestion, particularly during the morning rush hour. Adomas Bužinskas, the city administration director, reported that on September 2, vehicle passages at Vilnius intersections reached 1.09 million between 7:00 and 9:00 AM, an 18 percent increase compared to the previous week.

To mitigate these issues, the city is adjusting public transport schedules for the 633 buses and trolleybuses operating on municipal streets and expanding priority for public transit at intersections. Additionally, officials have updated 56 traffic light programs this year; in areas like Laisvės Avenue, vehicle throughput has reportedly increased by approximately 16 percent.

Looking ahead, the city plans to introduce smart intersection technology this autumn, including a smart corridor on Kareivių Street. A real-time traffic analysis system is already active on Nemenčinės Avenue to adjust traffic light timing dynamically. While congestion remains high on streets such as Švitrigailos, Žirmūnų, and the Ozo–Ukmergės junction, officials expect gradual improvement as roadwork stages conclude.
