Vilnius: One-ton metal pipe recovered from Neris River
During ongoing cleaning operations in the Neris River in Vilnius, divers recovered a metal pipe weighing approximately one ton and measuring about five meters in length. Experts suggest the object may have been used in heating or sewage systems. Officials believe the pipe is roughly 40 years old and may have entered the river prior to Lithuania's restoration of independence.
Due to limited access for heavy machinery at the discovery site, the pipe had to be towed to the Valakampiai I beach to be brought ashore. The extraction was assisted by the municipal company Grinda and took approximately two hours. The object will be stored for later disposal with other scrap metal.
This discovery is part of a larger cleaning initiative led by the real estate development company Darnu Group. So far this year, divers have cleared approximately two kilometers of the riverbed, including the removal of 800 kilograms of tires and over 100 kilograms of glass waste. The project aims to clean a total of 7.5 to 8 kilometers of the riverbed this year. Other items recovered include compact discs, an amber grinding machine, a child's tricycle, and sleds.
