Vilnius to create Medininkai victims' memorial square in Žirmūnai
In early July, the Historical Memory Commission of the Vilnius City Council approved a proposal to establish a new square in the Žirmūnai district to commemorate the victims of the 1991 Medininkai killings. Commission chair Kamilė Gogelienė said the site is being considered near the existing Angelų Sargų square and that the name of the square will be discussed with local residents. The final decision is expected this autumn.
Relatives of the victims, including Šarūnas Orlavičius – the son of slain officer Stanislovas Orlavičius – welcomed the initiative, recalling earlier attempts to name streets after the victims that never materialised. The project aims to create a respectful public space that honours the fallen officers while involving the community in its design and naming.
