Vilsund Blue mussel farm halts production in Denmark over new sampling requirements
A 2024 report from Denmark's Mussel Committee shows that the Danish Fisheries Authority promised new control rules would not add extra work for mussel producers. Two years later, Vilsund Blue in Nykøbing Mors is forced to stop harvesting because a EU sampling plan was never approved, leaving the company to sort shells, sea stars, snails and other organisms from every catch. Director Jan Christensen says the requirement is "physically impossible" and that the company cannot hire enough staff to carry out the sorting. Production has been paused, about 50 employees have been sent home, and the firm is seeking a dispensation or an extension of the guidance period to find a solution.
