Vimmerby businesses surveyed on cash acceptance
A mapping of businesses in Vimmerby reveals that 80 percent of surveyed shops, restaurants, and services currently accept cash, while 20 percent do not.
This survey follows discussions regarding a new law set to take effect on July 1, 2026, which will mandate that grocery stores and pharmacies accept cash payments. The legislation aims to prevent social exclusion for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly.
According to Alexander Gustafsson, manager at Ica Supermarket in Vimmerby, approximately 20 percent of customers still use cash, particularly toward the end of the month. While digital payments like BankID, Swish, and mobile wallets are increasingly common, a Riksbanken report from September 2025 indicates that physical payment cards remain the most frequent method used in stores.
