Vietnam economy driven by high-tech FDI and digital growth

Vietnam is experiencing a significant economic shift driven by high-tech foreign direct investment (FDI) and a growing digital economy. Total registered FDI reached $38.06 billion in the first seven months of 2026, a 58% year-on-year increase. This influx is reshaping industrial real estate demand, with major projects proposed by entities like Samsung, Microsoft, and G42. Notably, Samsung is planning a $4 billion chip packaging project, while a consortium including Microsoft and FPT has proposed a $2.1 billion AI and data center project.

To support this growth, the Ministry of Construction has proposed including four major national railway projects in the 2026-2030 FDI attraction list, with an estimated total investment of over 445 trillion VND. These projects aim to modernize transport and reduce logistics costs.

Domestically, Prime Minister Le Minh Hung emphasized the critical role of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which constitute nearly 98% of active businesses. He urged SMEs to leverage technology and innovation to become a reliable foundation for larger enterprises. Meanwhile, the digital economy is a key driver, accounting for 14.02% of GDP in 2025, with a national target to reach 30% by 2030.
