Vincenzo Giuntento convicted of illegal weapons possession
Former Italian footballer Vincenzo Giuntento, a 2006 World Cup winner who played for clubs including Juventus and Udinese, has faced legal consequences following investigations into the 'Ndrangheta mafia clan.
Giuntento was convicted of illegal possession of firearms after being found with two pistols in his home. While he was acquitted of direct membership in a mafia organization, he received a two-year sentence for the improper storage of weapons that had been transferred to his father. His father, Giuseppe Giuntento, a construction entrepreneur, was sentenced to 19 years in prison for connections to the 'Grande Aracri' clan and for using mafia influence in his business dealings in northern Italy.
In a recent interview, Giuntento expressed deep distress over the stigma attached to his name and the impact on his family, stating that he is being judged by his surname rather than his own actions. He emphasized his disdain for the mafia and his desire to clear his family name.
