Vindelns kommun introduces new employee dress code
Vindelns kommun has implemented new guidelines for professional dress and appearance, effective September 1. The policy, titled ‘Riktlinje för professionell klädsel och framtoning’, aims to foster trust, security, and professional conduct among employees.
The guidelines specify that clothing must be clean, intact, well-maintained, and appropriate for the work being performed. Specifically, the municipality states that short garments, deep necklines, and transparent clothing are unsuitable. Additionally, clothing featuring offensive, political, or discriminatory messages is prohibited. The policy also covers personal hygiene, advising employees to avoid strong scents.
HR Manager Katarina Häggström stated that the municipality needs to take responsibility, noting that managers had requested a formal document to support discussions with staff. While the municipality emphasizes respect for personal style, cultural expression, and religious attire, repeated violations of the guidelines may lead to disciplinary action.
The decision has faced criticism. Veera Littmarck, chief legal officer for Sveriges Lärare, questioned the municipality's authority to implement such rules, suggesting they may infringe upon freedom of expression.
