Vinegar and Bay Leaf Mix Gains Popularity as Natural Home Cleaner

A mixture of white vinegar and bay leaves is being promoted as an inexpensive, multi‑purpose household cleaner and insect repellent. The preparation can follow a quick method—boiling water, vinegar and a few leaves for ten minutes—or a slower maceration, leaving eight to ten leaves in half a litre of vinegar for several days to release essential oils.

The solution is used to remove limescale, degrease surfaces, brighten handles and tiles, clean refrigerator interiors, and deter pests such as ants, cockroaches and mosquitoes. It is effective for cleaning but, as experts note, does not disinfect; the vinegar provides acid cleaning action while the bay leaf contributes fragrance and a mild repellent effect.

Guidelines advise against applying the mixture on natural stone, electronic screens or untreated wood because of its acidity. Interest in the remedy has risen amid higher cleaning product prices and growing environmental awareness, especially in Spain and the United States.
