Household hacks use kitchen staples for cleaning and maintenance

Various household tips suggest using common kitchen ingredients to improve cleaning efficiency and appliance maintenance.

For floor cleaning, adding two to three tablespoons of household vinegar or a small amount of vinegar essence to ten liters of water can help keep floors cleaner for longer. Vinegar acts as an antibacterial agent, dissolves grease, and removes residue from previous cleaners. However, it should not be used on natural stone like marble or limestone, nor on unsealed or oiled parquet and cork, as the acid may cause damage.

To maintain clean windows, dissolving one tablespoon of cornstarch in warm water can create an invisible protective layer on glass surfaces. This layer helps reduce the electrostatic attraction of dust and prevents dirt from adhering quickly. Adding vinegar to this mixture can also help remove grease and limescale.

For noisy kettles, limescale buildup on heating elements can cause loud bubbling and popping sounds. Using citric acid—either in liquid or powder form—to descale the appliance can restore quiet operation by removing these mineral deposits.
