Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova settle legal dispute over Massachusetts wind project

Vineyard Wind and GE Vernova have reached a confidential settlement, resolving a legal dispute that threatened the continuity of the 806 MW offshore wind project in Massachusetts. As part of the agreement, GE Vernova has withdrawn its notice to terminate its contract and dismissed all outstanding legal actions.

The conflict arose from a $1.3 billion contract, with GE Vernova claiming $360 million in unpaid fees. Vineyard Wind, a joint venture involving Iberdrola’s subsidiary Avangrid and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, had contested the termination notice, arguing it jeopardized the project’s ability to supply power to the New England grid.

The dispute was exacerbated by a turbine blade failure in July 2024, which caused technical delays and environmental concerns in Nantucket. While the settlement ensures the project continues, the specific financial terms regarding the costs of defective blades and accumulated delays remain undisclosed.
