Vingroup and Alstom sign deal for 200 Hanoi metro trains

Vingroup and the French technology group Alstom have signed a major agreement to supply 200 Metropolis metro trainsets for Hanoi’s urban rail network expansion. The project covers five metro lines (Lines 1, 2, 8, 10, and 14) spanning approximately 303.5 km.

Under the contract, Alstom will design and manufacture the first 83 trainsets at its facility in Valenciennes Petite-Forêt, France. A significant component of the deal is a technology transfer agreement that will enable Vingroup to produce and assemble the remaining 117 trainsets within Vietnam. This collaboration aims to enhance Vietnam’s domestic rail manufacturing capabilities and integrate the country more deeply into the global industrial value chain.

The new-generation five-car trains feature lightweight aluminum alloy bodies to reduce energy consumption and track wear. They are designed for Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4), allowing for fully automated, driverless operation. Additionally, the trains will utilize advanced braking systems that combine disc brakes with regenerative braking to recover energy during deceleration.
