Vietnam legal updates: Corruption trials and criminal sentencing
In Thanh Hoa, former Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee, Lê Đức Giang, and ten other defendants are facing trial for violating regulations on the management and use of state assets. The case involves the illegal transfer and licensing of mineral mining rights at Mine No. 2 in Thiệu Hóa, which caused a loss of over 5.1 billion VND to the state. Several officials and business representatives are accused of receiving bribes ranging from 20 million to 180 million VND to facilitate these illegal activities.
In Vĩnh Long, a court has sentenced truck driver Nguyễn Văn Bảo Trung to 2 years and 6 months in prison for a traffic violation that resulted in the death of a 14-year-old girl in September 2024. The victim's family has expressed disagreement with the sentence and intends to appeal. This legal proceeding follows a period of intense public scrutiny after the fatal accident.
Additionally, authorities in Quảng Trị have prosecuted Nguyễn Đình Giang for murder. Giang is accused of using a handgun to shoot his colleague, Phạm Anh Tuấn, at a hotel in Savannakhet, Laos, due to personal conflicts. After the shooting, the suspect illegally entered Vietnam and was subsequently apprehended by police in Lai Châu.
