Vinh Long police rescue student from online kidnapping scam
Police in Vinh Long province have rescued a second-year information technology student who fell victim to an ‘online kidnapping’ scam. The student was manipulated by fraudsters into believing she needed to pay a 200 million VND deposit for study abroad procedures in Taiwan.
After the student’s family refused to provide the funds, the perpetrators contacted the family demanding a 100 million VND ransom, threatening to move the student to Cambodia if the payment was not made. Following a report from the family, local authorities identified the situation as a psychological manipulation scheme aimed at asset misappropriation. The student was located and rescued by the Vinh Long Criminal Police Department in coordination with local ward police.
