Vinkovci authorities identify underground peat fire as cause of regional smoke

Authorities in Vinkovci have identified the cause of recent unpleasant odors and smoke affecting the areas of Tordinci, Nuštar, and Vinkovci. An underground peat and organic matter fire is currently burning at the Sinkoš site near the Vuka River, south of Tordinci.

The fire covers an area of approximately 100 by 100 meters. Because it is an underground fire, it lacks open flames and instead manifests as intense smoke and smoldering, which complicates efforts to locate and extinguish it. Officials state that prolonged drought and a significant lack of groundwater caused the peat layer to dry out, making it combustible.

Firefighters from the Tordinci Volunteer Fire Department (DVD Tordinci), with support from the Tordinci Municipality and the Vukovar-Srijem County Firefighting Community, are working to contain the spread. Because the site is located within a water protection area, Hrvatske vode has been notified. Authorities have asked citizens for patience as intervention and remediation efforts continue.
