Vinod Kapri’s film ‘Pyre’ set for October 23 release
National Award-winning filmmaker Vinod Kapri’s Hindi film, ‘Pyre’, is scheduled for theatrical release on October 23, 2026. Set in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand, the film depicts the lives of an elderly couple living in a remote Himalayan village while waiting for their children, who have migrated elsewhere for better opportunities.
In an effort to achieve authenticity, Kapri cast local residents Padam Singh, a retired Indian Army soldier, and Hira Devi, a farmer, in the lead roles. Both actors are making their cinematic debuts. Kapri noted that the actors' lived experiences and natural emotions brought a level of truth to the screen that conventional actors might not have achieved.
The project has already garnered significant international recognition, winning 18 awards, including 15 Best Film honors at various festivals. The film features music by Academy Award-winning composer Mychael Danna and includes a song with lyrics by the veteran poet Gulzar. The film is produced by Vinod Kapri, Suresh Joshi, and Arindra Rai Chaudhuri, with theatrical distribution handled by Cinépolis.
