Vintage 1950s names see resurgence in France

Vintage names from the 1950s are experiencing a resurgence in France as young parents seek classic and reassuring options for their children. Names such as Jean, Marie, Michel, and Martine, which were highly prevalent during the baby boom, are being rediscovered after being considered outdated for several decades.

Experts from the Fédération Française de Psychogénéalogie suggest this trend is often linked to a desire to anchor children within their family lineage, as many young parents today have grandparents born around 1950. However, specialists note that choosing these names can sometimes trigger the emergence of family secrets or unresolved emotional histories through psychogenealogy.

Specific names like Joséphine and Marcel are also seeing a comeback. Data indicates a steady interest in Joséphine, with 575 girls receiving the name in 2025 compared to 540 the previous year. These trends reflect a cyclical pattern where names once considered old-fashioned gain a new, elegant, and timeless appeal.
