Viola Matthäus discusses miscarriages and motherhood
Viola Matthäus, daughter of former footballer Lothar Matthäus, has spoken publicly for the first time about experiencing two miscarriages before the birth of her daughter, Kaia, in May.
In an interview with Bunte magazine, Matthäus and her husband, Andreas Gangl, shared that the losses caused significant emotional distress and strained their marriage. One pregnancy ended in the fifth month, and Matthäus recalled being alone during a delivery in a Vienna hospital in February 2022 due to COVID-19 restrictions. A second miscarriage occurred in the eighth week of pregnancy.
After finding a way to process their grief, the couple welcomed their daughter on May 14, describing the experience as a source of great happiness and relief.
