Violence against emergency responders and murder trial in Germany
In Austria, a court case in St. Pölten highlighted the increasing risks faced by emergency personnel. A 19-year-old Red Cross employee testified that she was attacked by a resident of a social home in Tulln while attempting to transport a patient. Although the defendant claimed he only grabbed her to prevent her from falling down stairs, and the judge issued an acquittal, police spokesperson Johann Baumschlager noted a significant rise in resistance against state authority. Statistics show cases rose from 230 in 2020 to 346 in 2025.
In Germany, a murder trial has commenced in Mannheim against a 17-year-old Syrian national. The defendant is accused of killing his 19-year-old girlfriend in a forest in March. Prosecutors allege the attack was motivated by jealousy and perceived infidelity after the victim attempted to end the relationship. The defendant reportedly struck the victim repeatedly with his fists and used wooden branches to inflict fatal injuries. Due to the defendant's age, the proceedings are being held behind closed doors.
