Violence and arson escalate in Morelos, Mexico
The state of Morelos is experiencing a surge in violence, characterized by riots following the arrest and release of a drug trafficker, multiple murders, and targeted shootings related to extortion. Criminal groups have resorted to burning sugarcane fields and vehicles, which has left thousands of workers unable to commute and several towns isolated.
In Cuautla, a fire completely destroyed a Bodega Aurrerá office. The region is currently facing intense conflict between at least six different cartels, contributing to high rates of extortion, robbery, kidnapping, and murder.
In response to the crisis, President Claudia Sheinbaum has stated she will take one month to consult and assess the situation in Morelos before implementing specific measures to curb the criminality.
