Violence and institutional negligence reported in Argentina and Mexico
In Añatuya, Argentina, a 15-year-old girl was physically assaulted and suffocated in the street by two individuals. Police investigations suggest the attack was premeditated, allegedly ordered by a schoolmate who had been threatening the victim since the beginning of the year. Medical examinations confirmed the teenager suffered from visible edema, severe neck pain, and trauma from kicks. The case has been classified as “Threats and Minor Injuries,” and authorities are working to locate the aggressors.
In Mexico, Fátima Hernández Angulo, a student at the Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México (UAEM), has become an activist following her experience of sexual abuse by a classmate in 2019. Hernández Angulo reported that despite the perpetrator having multiple complaints of sexual violence and rape within various research centers at the institution, university authorities failed to take disciplinary action. Instead, the institution allegedly provided the student with academic support and attempted to mediate a confrontation between the victim and the aggressor, leading to claims of institutional negligence and revictimization.
