Violence at Cologne derby leaves six injured
Severe riots occurred during the Bundesliga derby between 1. FC Köln and Borussia Mönchengladbach at the Rhein-Energie-Stadion on October 11, 2026. The violence, triggered by a goal in the 67th minute, resulted in at least six injuries, including two spectators (one of whom is a child), a security officer, and three police officers.
During the escalation, fans from the visiting section used emergency hammers to destroy Plexiglas safety barriers and threw pyrotechnics and firecrackers toward the home stands. The Cologne police reported significant delays in responding to the upper tier, noting that it took officers between five and eight minutes to reach the area where the violence was occurring.
North Rhine-Westphalia Interior Minister Herbert Reul condemned the actions, questioning how prohibited items are still entering stadiums and criticizing individuals wearing balaclavas who seek conflict. Borussia Mönchengladbach President Rainer Bonhof expressed shame and announced investigations to identify and punish those responsible.
