Violence erupts during Atletico Gargano and San Severo Under-19 match
A youth football match between Atletico Gargano and San Severo Calcio at the Riccardo Spina stadium in Vieste was suspended following a violent brawl at the end of the first half. The incident involved punches and kicks, leading to the referee, Marco Buonpensiero, halting the game to ensure the safety of those present.
Five players from Atletico Gargano were sent to the emergency room for treatment, with one player expected to be sidelined for five days. Atletico Gargano released a statement expressing deep indignation, claiming their players were surrounded and attacked by opponents amidst a climate of offensive behavior. The club expressed solidarity with the referee and called for competent authorities to investigate the responsibilities.
San Severo Calcio 1922 also condemned the violence but offered a different account of the escalation. The club suggested the initial aggression may have been triggered by an Atletico Gargano member slapping a San Severo player. They further claimed the match suspension was necessitated by pitch invasions following the opening of gates by Atletico Gargano. San Severo stated they would take internal disciplinary measures against their involved members, while maintaining that the subsequent behaviors were unjustifiable for both sides.
