Brazil survey: 98% of women change habits to avoid violence

A national survey conducted by the Patrícia Galvão and Locomotiva institutes, supported by Uber, reveals that 98% of Brazilian women adopt specific strategies to mitigate the risk of violence in their daily lives. The study, which surveyed 1,500 people, found that 78% of women have experienced at least one form of violence.

Key findings indicate that 94% of women feel insecure regarding daily violence, leading to significant behavioral changes. Approximately 90% of respondents avoid certain locations, 83% avoid going out at night, and 69% have altered their usual routes. The fear of violence also impacts professional and educational opportunities, with 45% of women stating they have passed up work or study opportunities due to insecurity.

In addition to the national survey, regional data highlights the severity of the issue. In Santa Catarina, judicial records show approximately 475,000 cases of domestic and family violence against women between 2020 and 2026, averaging 200 occurrences per day. The survey emphasizes a widespread demand for improved urban infrastructure, such as better lighting and public transport, as well as expanded support channels for victims.
