Violent attacks in Rio Branco and Sooretama underscore rising crime in Brazil

In Rio Branco, Acre, a 38‑year‑old man, Tallis da Silva Santos, survived a severe beating by a group of armed assailants on Avenida Sobral. He escaped to a supermarket, where staff called police and emergency services. He suffered a dislocated right arm, a deep head wound with moderate traumatic brain injury, ear bleeding, bruises and scrapes, and was later taken to hospital in stable condition. Police have not yet identified the attackers.

In Sooretama, Espírito São Pedro, 32‑year‑old Felipe Nunes Ferreira was shot dead on a street near the Salvador neighbourhood. After the murder, the gunmen rode a motorcycle to a nearby emergency unit and pointed a weapon inside. The killing, the ninth homicide in the city this year, sparked fear among residents who feel abandoned by law enforcement.

Both incidents illustrate a surge in violent crime in different regions of Brazil, with local authorities struggling to apprehend perpetrators and residents expressing insecurity.
