Violent protests and state responses reported across Europe and Mexico
A wave of violent protests has impacted several European nations, including France, Italy, and Belgium. In France, the government has responded to unrest by decreeing curfews in various localities, restricting protest authorizations, and increasing police deployment following accusations that ultra-left groups are behind the violence.
In Italy, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government has addressed acts of vandalism and looting by deploying 500 additional soldiers to Milan. New measures include the creation of a crime for participating in violent demonstrations, harsher penalties, and lowering the age of criminal responsibility to 14 years to address the high involvement of minors.
In Belgium, authorities have banned gatherings and reinforced police presence in response to looting and violent clashes. While many demonstrations stem from legitimate social demands related to the rising cost of living and the welfare state crisis, officials note they have been co-opted by violent organizations.
In Mexico, social tension has escalated due to water crises in the Guadalajara Metropolitan Area. Protests regarding poor water quality led to confrontations between citizens and security forces. Local authorities have publicly admitted to the excessive use of force during these dispersal efforts.
