Viorel Melnic sent to trial for illegal party financing
Former Moldovan MP Viorel Melnic has been sent to trial on charges of illegal political party financing and money laundering. The investigation, conducted by the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office, alleges that Melnic acted on behalf of the “Victory/Pobeda” Political Bloc to channel funds from prohibited sources.
Prosecutors claim that between July and September 2025, Melnic received multiple installments totaling approximately 3.33 million lei, including amounts in Moldovan lei, euros, and US dollars. These funds were allegedly used to promote the political bloc’s image, support a candidate during the September 28, 2025, parliamentary elections, and finance various rallies and meetings.
Additionally, the illicit funds were reportedly used for public works, such as renovating a football stadium in Orhei and apartment courtyards in southern Moldova. Investigators also allege that part of the money was converted through USDT cryptocurrency transactions via an intermediary linked to Ilan Șor to conceal the origin of the funds.
